Map of the new world

Archipelagoes

At the end of this sentence, rain will begin.
At the rain’s edge, a sail.

Slowly the sail will lose sight of islands;
into a mist will go the belief in harbours
of an entire race.

The ten-years war is finished.
Helen’s hair, a gray
cloud.
Troy, a white ashpit
by the drizzling sea.

The drizzle tightens like the strings of a harp.
A man with clouded eyes picks up the rain
and plucks the first line of the Odyssey.

Mappa del nuovo mondo

Arcipelaghi

Alla fine di questa frase, comincerà la pioggia.
All'orlo della pioggia una vela.

Lenta la vela perderà di vista le isole;
in una foschia se ne andrà la fede nei porti
di un'intera razza.

La guerra dei dieci anni è finita.
La chioma di Elena, una nuvola grigia.
Troia, an accumulation of white ash
near the dripping of the sea. The trickle

tend like the strings of a harp.
A man with clouded eyes picks up the rain
and plucks the first line of the Odyssey.

The Poem That Took the Place of a Mountain

There it Was, word for word, The Poem That Took The
place of a mountain.

He Breathed ITS oxygen,
Even When Turned the book lay in the dust of his table.

It reminded him how he had needed
A place to go to in his own direction,

How he had recomposed the pines,
Shifted the rocks and picked his way among clouds,

For the outlook that would be right,
Where he would be complete in an unexplained completion:

The exact rock where his inexactness
Would discover, at last, the view toward which they had edged,

Where he could lie and, gazing down at the sea,
Recognize his unique and solitary home.

La poesia che prese il posto di un monte

Era là, parola per parola,
La poesia che prese il posto of a mountain.

He breathes oxygen,
Even when the book was turned into the dust of the table.

reminded him how he needed a place to get a
in his direction,

How he had recomposed the pines,
move the rocks and found a path through the clouds,

To reach the observation point right
where he would complete a comprehensive unexplained:

The exact rock where his inaccuracies
discover, in the end, the view that had been gaining,

Where he could lie down and staring down the sea, Recognize
his unique and solitary home.
